We are proud to welcome you to Outflow Petroleum Insights. It is a pleasure to have you visit our website where you will find knowledge and answers to your business and industry questions. We look forward to providing a service to companies, groups and individuals committed to improve knowledge of the Southern African petroleum industry.

South Africa produces, imports, and consumes the largest share of liquid fuels in Africa. A majority of SA’s fuels exports are destined to neighbouring economies. The SA petroleum industry has great strategic importance to the economy as a source of jobs, business opportunities and government income. Its influence extends beyond economic boundaries to society and the physical environment. It is tightly regulated, yet a safe investment market as the regulatory framework guarantees companies reasonable returns.

Challenges existing in the industry include limited access by local entrepreneurs to finance, key infrastructure and core markets. Other challenges include poor technical skills development, changing fuels specifications, environmental laws and slower rate of transformation. Advances in information and communication technologies are also changing consumer behaviour patterns and business model configurations of companies in the industry.

Business leaders and entrepreneurs face these challenges while executing strategies in their companies. To be effective in these environments, petroleum companies need to carefully integrate information from internal and external sources and use that to challenge their biases when searching for growth.

Outflow Petroleum Insights’ goal is to use our experience, research and analytical capabilities as well as strategic planning tools to provide knowledge that assists company leaders and business owners in setting strategies, managing costs, risks and capturing opportunities in the industry today and in the long-term.

Motorist feedback survey

Covid-19 has disrupted old habits and warped daily routines, yet the customary expectations of South African motorists at fuel service stations remain.

Fuel retailers, when resetting for the Covid-19 impact, ought to bear in mind the changing fuel retailing landscape.
Monitoring fuel and shop sales alone will fall short in tracking the reforming consumer behaviours and expectations. A renewed approach to creating memorable customer service should consider the customer's viewpoint.

These are some of the conclusions from our latest survey of motorists in South Africa, conducted during the recent lockdowns.
